Mancini watches Tresoldi: the choice between Italy and Germany postponed

Roberto Mancini, head coach of the Italian national team, has included the Club Brugge youngster Nicolò Tresoldi in the list of potential forwards, but the striker continues to wear the Germany Under‑21 shirt. The final decision on which senior national team to represent has been postponed to a date to be determined.

Mancini sees him as a future reference point for the Azzurri attack. The youngster, born in 2004, regularly plays for Club Brugge in Belgium. He has responded to the call-up from Germany Under‑21, confirming his presence in the German youth team.

Despite the Italian interest, the player has still postponed the final choice regarding the senior national team. His stay in the German youth squad has been reiterated several times in recent days. Nicolò Tresoldi's international future therefore remains to be defined.

The doubt between Italy and Germany

In an interview given to Sport, Tresoldi said he wants to first focus on the Under‑21 European Championship before deciding his senior future. “I wear the Germany shirt with pride, I am happy to be here. I want to play the age‑group Euros, and then we’ll see what happens. I have had good talks with Klopp and I explained my situation to him: he understood. He is really great, it wasn’t the typical conversation between a player and his coach, but more like something between a father and a son. He told me that the door is always open for me, and I said the same to Mancini.”

Tresoldi emphasized that the bond with Germany is strong, but the one with Italy is equally important, given that he was born and raised in the country. “It wouldn’t be just because my father comes from Italy, I was also born and raised there,” he added, keeping the door open to the Italian national team. Tresoldi’s father, of Italian origin, has always supported his son’s path.

For now the youngster has decided to focus on the path with Germany Under‑21 and on the goal of playing the upcoming age‑group European Championship. The next Under‑21 European Championship represents for him the most important stage before any senior decision. The battle between the two federations for his international future therefore remains open.

Mancini confirmed that he will continue to monitor the situation while waiting to understand which shirt Tresoldi will choose to wear for the rest of his career. He said he wants to assess the situation also ahead of the upcoming commitments of the Italian national team. The final decision will come later, when the player has completed his stint with the German youth squad.
