Manchester United's Lewis Hall pursuit stalls as Newcastle stand firm

Manchester United have confirmed their interest in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall after the 21-year-old England international returned to Tyneside from a pre-season training camp in La Manga with a minor injury.

The Premier League side, managed by Michael Carrick, have already made one formal approach for Hall this summer but Newcastle have rejected that initial bid and remain unwilling to part with the defender during the current transfer window. Newcastle’s stance has hardened despite the loss of Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon already this summer, with club sources insisting Hall will not be sold.

Hall is central to new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle’s defensive structure for the upcoming season, with the left-back viewed as a key figure in the club’s rebuild at St James’ Park. His departure would leave a significant void in Jaissle’s plans, particularly given Hall’s role in the team’s defensive setup.

The 21-year-old has been working separately from his Newcastle teammates in Spain, focusing on upper-body rehabilitation, and will miss Jaissle’s first match in charge against Valencia this evening. Fabian Schär, another Newcastle defender, has also been granted time away from the La Manga camp to recover from injury, with both players expected to return to full training in due course.

Manchester United are keen to add defensive cover and have identified Hall as a priority target, with Carrick reportedly holding the defender in high regard. Recent reports suggest Hall would consider a move to Old Trafford if a suitable fee could be agreed, though Newcastle’s position remains firm following a summer of high-profile exits.

Newcastle have also been linked with Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, but the Spanish club will only sanction a move if Salinas’ £13.7million release clause is triggered. Barcelona have previously had an offer for Hall rejected by Newcastle, adding another layer of competition for the player’s signature.

At Manchester United, Luke Shaw continues to occupy the left-back slot, with Patrick Dorgu deployed in a more advanced role. Carrick is understood to be exploring options to strengthen the defensive ranks, with Hall identified as a key target to bolster the squad’s depth in that area.

The standoff between the two clubs highlights the challenges Manchester United face in securing Hall’s signature, despite his apparent willingness to consider a move. Newcastle’s reluctance to sell, combined with their need for defensive stability, suggests the transfer window may close without a resolution.
