Manchester United’s Carrick faces mounting doubt after European loss

Growing doubt surrounds Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick after his side suffered a miserable 4‑1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, a loss that highlighted defensive frailties and intensified criticism from senior players, leaving his future in the balance.

Since being appointed permanently, Carrick has overseen eleven matches across all competitions, having guided United back into the Champions League with a strong second‑half run in the Premier League last season.

The campaign has yielded only a single victory in the league – a 2‑0 win over Ipswich Town – and one in Europe, a narrow success against Sabah, offering merely a brief respite from a dreadful start to the 2026/27 season.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has openly challenged Carrick’s tactics, while the coach has attempted to shift some responsibility onto his players, further eroding confidence within the squad. Amid the turmoil, reports from Italy suggest that United’s hierarchy have already begun discussions with a possible successor.

Conte talks intensify

Italian media indicate that former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is among the favourites to replace Carrick, with La Repubblica reporting that the wheels are already in motion for his potential appointment. According to the Italian daily, “Talks with Conte continued late Wednesday evening: the manager opened up about the possibility of returning to the Premier League, but has set specific conditions.” He is demanding carte blanche on the transfer market, the freedom to pick supporting players and trusted collaborators. The owners are expected to evaluate these demands within hours, the report adds, noting an opening exists but no agreement has yet been reached.

Other candidates emerge

Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is also cited as a favourite, praised for longer tenures at clubs with modest expectations compared with Old Trafford. Julian Nagelsmann, currently unemployed after managing Germany and Bayern Munich, is listed at shorter odds than Conte. Meanwhile, Jason Wilcox’s influence is questioned after defender Lisandro Martinez’s critical comments last week.

The stark contrast between Carrick’s precarious position and the concrete conditions being floated for a high‑profile replacement underscores how United’s season has shifted from on‑field struggles to a boardroom battle over the club’s future direction.
