Manchester United may chase January signings if form stalls
Manchester United are prepared to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, with Fabrizio Romano outlining two conditions that could trigger further signings. The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the Premier League campaign, prompting doubts over the current squad’s quality.
Why United are looking to reinforce
The club’s early-season struggles have left the board questioning whether the existing roster can compete consistently. United have already invested heavily in attack and midfield in recent windows, but defensive reinforcements are now seen as a priority, particularly at left‑back.
Romano noted that a previously explored move for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall fell through after the English defender committed his future to Newcastle, leaving United to revisit that position in January if the right opportunity arises.
Potential targets and next steps
In addition to defence, United are reportedly eyeing an experienced striker to add depth, with Crystal Palace forward Jean‑Philippe Mateta mentioned as a possible addition should forward Joshua Zirkzee depart Old Trafford.
Romano said on YouTube: “So Man United believe if the right opportunities are still there in terms of players and if the form will remain poor, Man Utd will still be keen on signing players. Let’s see how many. This is too early to say, but United would study opportunities on the market in the January window.”
He added that the club’s activity will hinge on two factors – continued poor results and the availability of suitable players – urging fans to “keep an eye on that one”.
If United’s performances fail to improve and the market offers the right profiles, the Red Devils could become active in the winter market, adding depth and competition for places across defence and attack.
