Lisandro Martinez slams Man Utd board and Jason Wilcox after Atletico loss
Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine defender for Manchester United, launched a scathing critique of the club’s summer recruitment and technical director Jason Wilcox after United’s 2‑0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening. The criticism came as pressure mounted on manager Michael Carrick following another negative result.
Defensive woes and red‑card controversy
United’s poor run continued with a straight red card for Leny Yoro, a decision that compounded a night in which Bryan Mbeumo missed two chances, Marcus Rashford and captain Bruno Fernandes also failed to find the net, leaving United winless in five consecutive games across all competitions.
Martinez’s demands for investment
Speaking to Amazon Prime, Martinez said the club “did a fantastic season last season” and now expects “more investment, 100 percent” from the technical director. He added that players must improve but a strong squad is essential for nights like the one in Madrid.
Martinez blames board as United’s Champions League loss fuels Carrick’s crisis
Support for Carrick and criticism of board
Martinez defended Carrick, stating “he does his best” and that constant managerial changes are not the solution. He urged the board to address other areas, highlighting the lack of a new striker and competition for left‑back Luke Shaw as ongoing concerns.
Rooney’s rebuttal
Former United captain Wayne Rooney responded, calling Martinez’s outburst “disrespectful” and suggesting the performance had positive signs. Rooney argued that internal issues should stay within the club and warned that public criticism could further destabilise the squad.
Carrick’s response
When asked about Martinez’s comments, Carrick said he had not seen the interview and emphasized the need for unity, noting United are now winless in five matches across all competitions.
