Manchester City PSG target's five‑year deal collapses, halting rebuild

After splurging £116 million on Elliot Anderson, Manchester City PSG’s summer rebuild hit a snag when 18‑year‑old French centre‑back Hermann Malonga’s five‑year deal, reportedly agreed last month, collapsed, leaving a void in the club’s defensive depth ahead of the new season.

Le Parisien’s Benjamin Quarez reported that Malonga rejected a contract renewal from Paris Saint‑Germain in favour of joining Manchester City’s development pathway at the Etihad Stadium in June. The French teenager chose to leave Paris and its Saint‑Germain setup, signalling a clear preference for the English side.

The 18‑year‑old was described as seeking a Premier League move, reinforcing his desire to play in England rather than remain at PSG. His ambition underlined the appeal of the Premier League for young French talent.

Manchester City had scouted Malonga on several occasions and rated him as a player of very high potential. The club’s strategy was to initially integrate him into the senior squad before arranging a strategic loan to ensure continued development at the highest level.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the deal to bring Malonga to Manchester City has now collapsed, providing a concise verdict on the situation. No specific reason for the breakdown was disclosed, though late‑stage failures often involve a change in the player’s personal preference, a shift in club relations, or a competing offer.

The collapse represents a blow to Manchester City’s defensive reinforcement plans this summer, coming after the £116 million acquisition of Elliot Anderson. While Josko Gvardiol’s new contract secures the top of the defensive hierarchy, the lack of depth behind him remains a concern for the club’s summer recruitment agenda.

Director of football Hugo Viana has overseen a busy summer, with the Malonga signing framed as an investment in the academy pipeline rather than an immediate first‑team solution. Its collapse therefore creates a setback in long‑term planning, as young centre‑backs of Malonga’s calibre are scarce in the market.

Viana now faces renewed pressure to identify alternative centre‑back options before the transfer window closes. Whether the club will pursue another high‑potential youngster or rely on existing depth will become clearer as pre‑season preparations progress.
