Man Utd back Carrick after Atletico defeat while Conte stays on radar

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick will remain in charge despite a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in Spain on Tuesday evening, confirmed transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. Romano also said there are no immediate talks with Antonio Conte, who would be willing to take charge of the Red Devils now.

Champions League setback

The defeat in the Champions League continued United’s poor start to the season. The Red Devils have collected only six points from six Premier League matches and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup in the third round.

Club’s stance on the manager

TEAMtalk’s insider Graeme Bailey reported on 21 September that United have no plans to sack Carrick, a view echoed after the Tottenham draw on 10 October when co‑owners INEOS reaffirmed their support. Romano reiterated that United are backing Carrick even after the Atletico loss.

On his YouTube channel Romano addressed speculation about “immediate consequences” for Carrick, stating that no managerial change is expected “in the next hours” and that the club is not contacting any other manager at present.

He added that United are hoping for different results in the coming weeks, monitoring the squad closely because the current form is “not acceptable”. Yet the club remains “under control” and confident in Carrick for the next fixtures.

The Italian media have long linked Antonio Conte with United. Conte left Napoli at the end of last season and is currently without a club. Romano confirmed United have had no contact with the former Chelsea manager.

Conte, however, would be open to a mid‑season appointment at a historic club rather than moving to the Middle East. He told reporters he would consider any European side with a strong history, and United remain one of the names mentioned alongside Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.

Romano concluded that there are no concrete or serious discussions between Conte and United at this time, and that any potential move would still be in the future.
