Man Utd Ornstein warns Carrick of sack timeline as INEOS presses

Respected reporter David Ornstein has disclosed a decisive update on Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United, confirming that the club has set a clear sack timeline amid mounting pressure from owners and the INEOS consortium.

Recent form fuels the deadline

Last season Carrick exceeded expectations as head coach, yet the Red Devils have managed only two wins from their first nine fixtures across all competitions this campaign. On Tuesday night the side fell 2‑0 to Atletico Madrid after being reduced to ten men, intensifying scrutiny ahead of the weekend clash with Leeds United.

Journalist Nicolo Schira amplified the stakes on X, noting that the board will deem Carrick’s position at risk if the upcoming games against Leeds, Como and Bournemouth do not produce positive results.

Ornstein’s insight on the pressure cooker

Ornstein wrote in The Athletic that Carrick operates under constant pressure from ownership, executives, staff and players, a testament to the high expectations at Manchester United.

He added that while the hierarchy’s goodwill remains, “the manager will pay the price if there isn’t an improvement soon,” echoing the sentiment that past United managers have suffered similar fates after poor runs.

The reporter also highlighted fan dissatisfaction, recalling the unacceptable performance against Tottenham and the broader criticism aimed at the club’s structure, from the Glazers to Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Despite the criticism, Ornstein said the board currently backs Carrick, but that support will not last if results continue to falter.

The INEOS consortium’s “decisive” ultimatum, referenced in the original briefing, underscores the urgency of turning the tide before the Leeds fixture, which could prove pivotal for Carrick’s tenure.
