Man United’s gamble on Rashford: why the club still needs him

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

Man United face a shortage on the left flank after a costly summer, and the return of Marcus Rashford could fill that gap; Michael Carrick’s training squad may provide the environment needed to reintegrate the 28‑year‑old as the transfer window ticks down.

A year ago today, Marcus Rashford scored his first goal for Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in a pre‑season win over Daegu in South Korea. It marked the start of a new chapter after a summer in which United boss Ruben Amorim banished him and forced him to train separately with the ‘bomb squad’ at Carrington.

During his season at the Nou Camp, Rashford won the La Liga title and performed well enough to earn a recall to the England squad for this summer’s World Cup. His success contrasted with the earlier tension at United.

Barcelona declined to trigger a £26 million option to buy him before the mid‑June deadline, even though head coach Hansi Flick admitted over the weekend that he will miss the player. United have set a £40 million valuation, but no club has matched it, and Rashford’s £325,000‑a‑week salary from his five‑year contract signed in 2023 remains a hurdle.

Sport notes that several Premier League clubs, as well as teams from Italy, Germany, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, are still weighing a move, most likely on loan. Liverpool were excluded from the £40 million option, and Manchester City were also left out.

United have already spent £85 million this summer on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Barcelona paid the full wages on loan and offered half the £26 million price tag. Anthony Gordon’s £70 million transfer to Barcelona and Crysencio Summerville’s £68 million move to Al Hilal illustrate the high cost of replacements.

Rashford is among the final group of World Cup players due to report back next week, alongside England teammate Kobbie Mainoo and Argentina’s Lisandro Martinez. United have not confirmed a return date, but if he arrives it could be at Carrington or Maynooth, where Michael Carrick’s squad are training at Carton House before a friendly against Leeds at Croke Park next Wednesday.

Carrick, who played alongside Rashford and later coached him, is seen as a more conciliatory figure than Amorim, who once said he would rather play his 63‑year‑old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital than Rashford. Carrick’s influence could help reintegrate Rashford, as it did with Mainoo.

Nevertheless, with only a month left in the transfer window, uncertainty remains. United may still entertain offers, and with limited alternatives on the left wing, the club could be forced to decide whether to keep Rashford or seek another signing before the deadline.
