Malen skips Nations League with the Netherlands: emergency in Rome

Donyell Malen, Roma striker, has announced his withdrawal from the Netherlands national team for the Nations League due to an injury, announcement published on the official the Oranje website. The news came as a surprise, as Malen did not appear to be in difficulty after the 2-2 draw against Inter Saturday.

Extraordinary form and statistics

The 27-year-old has scored six goals in five Serie A appearances for Roma and provided an assist in a Champions League match. For the national team he has 13 goals in 56 senior caps, debuting in September 2019.

On 19 September 2026 (SEPTEMBER 19), in Rome, Rome, ROME, ITALY, Manu Kone celebrated the team's second goal together with Bryan Cristante and Donyell Malen during the match against Inter.

On 14 September 2026, in Turin, Italy, Malen scored the first goal of the match alongside Mario Hermoso.

Guus Til and Mexx Meerdink have been called up by the Oranje to replace Justin Kluivert and Malen in the upcoming Nations League fixtures. The Netherlands will face Germany, Serbia and Greece in Group 2, starting the campaign against Germany on 24 September.

It is the second blow for Roma, as Wesley has also withdrawn from the Brazil national team due to a muscular problem.

The extent of the physical issue has not been specified, but the decision confirms Malen's absence from the upcoming Nations League matches.
