Lyon's owner cites Botafogo debt as coach Fonseca quits unexpectedly

The new owner of Lyon warned that Botafogo still owes the club money, declaring “ deve dinheiro” in a statement on Wednesday. On the same day the club confirmed the resignation of Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca, who had been appointed in January 2025 by businessman John Textor, who no longer controls Lyon.
Board reaction to Fonseca's exit
The board said it was surprised by the mid‑season resignation. Fonseca's decision to join Sporting midway through the Europa campaign was described by Lyon as an unexpected and deeply regretted move. Club officials added that maintaining a partnership that could not assure total commitment was not in Lyon's interest.
Fonseca informed the directors that he wished to depart and take charge of Sporting. Sporting will pay a €5 million termination fee, equivalent to about R$30.5 million at current rates. In a farewell letter he thanked supporters, called the switch the fulfilment of a childhood dream and expressed pride and gratitude for his time at the club. He added that a part of his heart will always remain in Lyon.
Lyon dismisses Fonseca and appoints Maciel as interim manager
Lyon's hierarchy has already begun the search for a permanent head coach for the men's first team. In the interim, Jorge Maciel will assume coaching duties. Maciel's first match in charge is scheduled for Wednesday against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.
Fonseca oversaw 83 official games for Lyon, recording 47 victories, 12 draws and 24 defeats. So far this season the side has contested 16 league fixtures, winning eight, drawing three and losing five.
