Luis de la Fuente renews with Spain's La Roja until 2032 and looks to the future
Luis de la Fuente will continue at the helm of the Spanish national team until at least 2032, after signing a six‑year extension that keeps his link with the Roja. The celebration took place this Monday at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas, marking a moment of joy for the squad.
Match‑by‑match vision
The Haro coach explained that his approach is “short‑term‑focused”, thinking match by match. “I only think about the time and that we are very fragile, one can have many ideas, many long‑term projects, but life has taught me to be very short‑term‑focused and so I go match by match,” said the La Rioja coach.
The La Rioja coach also stated that the most immediate competition will be the Nations League, which will be contested in June, but his greatest dream is to take part in the 2030 World Cup. “I am very competitive, make no mistake that I will try with all our strength,” he added.
De la Fuente reiterated that the goal is to keep improving and compete for victory, because “it’s not that one gets used to winning, but that success lies in being ready to win and giving everything that is in your power.” He emphasized that “the best is yet to come, believe me, there are many good things still to enjoy.”
Thanks and commitment
During the ceremony he received video messages from Vicente del Bosque, who described him as “a reference” and gave him “a lot of confidence.” Captain Rodri Hernández told him that he is “one of those players you grow especially fond of.” Goalkeeper Unai Simón and midfielder Mikel Navarro also congratulated him, thanking him for his way of working.
The coach recalled that he has always declared himself a developer of people and athletes, and that he has deeply instilled the term “family” within the world‑champion group. “I think that is the way. I have always declared myself a developer, of people and athletes,” he emphasized, pointing out that the human aspect is as important as the sporting one.
De la Fuente made clear that he has not received nor heard offers from other destinations, and that he has already spent thirteen years in the RFEF house, which he feels like his home and second family. “I have already been in the house for thirteen years and I feel the RFEF as my home and as my other family, and I like to stay always very close to my loved ones, I want to stay here,” he said.
With the renewal, he accepted the great responsibility of staying at the level the national team deserves. “It is a huge responsibility, but we will rise to the occasion, we know the challenge we accept from pride, the honour of being nothing less than the national football selector of my country,” he concluded, assuring that they will not disappoint the fans.
