London City Lionesses claim statement win as Alexia Putellas debuts in WSL

London City Lionettes opened their Women’s Super League campaign with a 2‑1 win over Champions League‑chasing Manchester United, showing that summer spending is already paying dividends while the Red Devils’ youth‑focused rebuild under new manager Eva Olid starts shakily. The sell‑out crowd of 5,402 saw Alexia Putellas debut as Mary Earps watched from the bench. THINGS WE LEARNED are clear.

Early moments set the tone

Alanna Kennedy gave the hosts the lead in the ninth minute with a header from a corner. Danielle van de Donk doubled the advantage late on with a flick, while United’s Simi Awujo added a consolation goal with the final kick of the game.

Manchester United's youth rebuild struggles

United entered the season with a youth‑focused recruitment drive, signing defender Andrea Medina (22), winger Monica Jusu Bah (23), backup goalkeeper Janina Leitzig (27) and experienced defender Rebeca Bernal (29). The squad also saw the departure of Leah Galton, Gabby George, Millie Turner and Lisa Naalsund, and sold striker Melvine Malard to Chelsea for £850,000. New manager Eva Olid now faces the task of moulding this youthful group into a competitive side. Man United will look to improve after the setback.

Alexia Putellas, the two‑time Ballon d’Or winner, made her WSL debut at 32 after fourteen years at Barcelona. She recorded a single shot, which was saved, and spent much of the match deeper to help the team retain possession. “Alexia Putellas, everyone knows the things that can be gained, because it’s not only the things that she’s capable of doing but the things that she can facilitate,” said London City boss Eder Maestre.

The match attracted a sell‑out crowd of 5,402, the biggest home attendance in the club’s history. Owner Michele Kang, who also owns Lyon and Washington Spirit, highlighted the commercial boost, noting that Putellas is the second most‑followed women’s footballer on social media after Alisha Lehmann.

Mary Earps watched from the bench, while Spain defender Mapi Leon also featured in the squad, underscoring the calibre of players attracted by the Lionesses. The club’s ambition, combined with the challenge of a new league, was cited by Putellas as a key factor in leaving Barcelona.

THINGS WE LEARNED from the opening fixture include the immediate impact of high‑profile signings and the importance of team chemistry. If the Lionesses can build connections quickly, they could pose a serious threat to established clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal for the season’s biggest prizes.

The report was compiled by TARA ANSON‑WALSH for the FOOTBALL section on 4 September 2026.
