Loïs Openda absent against Crystal Palace, danger spreads to Nice

Medical examinations of Loïs Openda have not allayed concerns about his physical condition. The Belgian striker of Olympique Lyonnais is expected to miss the Europa League fixture against Crystal Palace and his absence also threatens the upcoming match against Nice.

He was struck on his right leg on Friday after a clash with RC Lens defender Ismaëlo Ganiou. The striker left the pitch limping, then was seen with crutches during the team's return. The footage observed after the match did nothing to reassure Paulo Fonseca's staff.

The medical examinations carried out after the incident have not eased the staff's doubts. No official statement specified the exact nature of the injury nor the duration of unavailability. The club remains cautious and monitors daily the evolution of the Belgian's right leg.

Consequences for the upcoming commitments

According to the regional daily Le Progrès, Openda will not be able to be present on Thursday for the Europa League match against Crystal Palace. The same information was confirmed this Sunday, highlighting the impact on Olympique Lyonnais' offensive setup.

The same physical issue could force the Belgian to withdraw for the upcoming match against Nice. Paulo Fonseca therefore risks having to line up without his centre‑forward for two important fixtures, both European and domestic.

Club reaction and outlook

Openda's return against RC Lens, a club he knows well, ended prematurely after the duel with Ganiou. His movement with crutches confirmed the staff's initial concerns.

Olympique Lyonnais has not yet issued an official statement on the injury, but the coach must prepare for the reception of Crystal Palace assuming the striker will not be available. Caution remains essential for the match against Nice's Eagles.

While awaiting a medical communication, doubt remains regarding Openda's availability for the upcoming commitments. Daily monitoring of his right leg will determine whether he can rejoin the squad before the forthcoming deadlines.
