Loan push for striker as West Brom chase Southampton target

West Bromwich Albion are being urged to secure a loan move for 24‑year‑old striker Cameron Archer from Southampton before the summer transfer window shuts, with the Baggies hoping the Jamaican‑born forward can add a different striking profile to their squad.

Archer arrived at Southampton in the summer of 2024 from Aston Villa for around £15 million. In his first season the club were relegated to the Championship and Archer logged just under 900 league minutes across 30 appearances, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

Fan desire and tactical fit

West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess said, “The overriding feeling in the fanbase is that the majority would love it if a move for Cameron Archer was able to materialise. However, I think that’s probably quite unlikely now.” He added that Archer would offer a different striker profile, more likely to make runs in behind and act as a poacher.

Burgess compared Archer with current forwards Jimmy‑Jay Morgan, Heggebo and Barney Stewart, noting that Archer could drift wide on the right and exploit spaces that the Baggies’ current attackers do not regularly occupy.

Implications for West Brom and Southampton

Southampton appear ready to let Archer leave on loan, having already signed Lewis Dobbin for around £9 million and added Divin Mubama on loan. A temporary move would give the striker regular Championship minutes and could give West Brom proven goal‑scoring power as they look to strengthen their squad.
