Own goal seals elimination

After a 1‑1 draw in the first leg, the second‑leg tie in Finland remained goalless at half‑time before Rovers pressed forward. Aaron Greene forced a fine stop from KuPS goalkeeper Johannes Kreidl, and the match appeared set for extra time.

Sixteen minutes from the end, a free‑kick from the left was headed back in by Akseli Pukko, grazing Greene’s head and then deflecting off the forehead of Graham Burke. The ball ricocheted into the corner, giving KuPS a decisive own goal and condemning Shamrock Rovers to European elimination.

Bradley rejects ‘easier’ path claim

“Disappointed with the goal, obviously,” Stephen Bradley told RTÉ Sport after the game, adding that the team had given away a “really poor goal”. He emphasized that the side had been structured and had taken the opponent’s momentum away, only to be undone by the own goal.

Bradley also dismissed Rovers had been offered an easier qualifying route for 2026, stating, “We’ll review at the end of the season, but it’s definitely not easier.” He said he did not understand the comment when the team is already competing in Europe.

The defensive display in Finland was far better than the earlier 5‑1 loss to Egnatia in Albania, where Rovers had led 3‑1 after the first leg. Yet the pattern of “soft” goals persisted, echoing a misplaced pass that led to a goal against Ararat‑Armenia.

Bradley stressed the need for a collective review once the league campaign ends, noting that teams accustomed to group stages rarely concede such soft goals. He called the season “frustrating” and warned that conceding soft goals makes qualifying for group stages difficult.

With the European exit, Shamrock Rovers now turn to a league match against Derry City at the Brandywell on Sunday. Their league lead could be reduced to a single point if St Pat's defeat Waterford on Friday, although the champions still hold two games in hand.

When asked if the disappointment will affect the rest of the season, Bradley replied, “It won’t. We’ll be ready. We’ve been here before, qualified for groups many times, and we understand the disappointment but we’ll be ready for Sunday.”
