Load management forces Palmer and others to miss England break

England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo are set to withdraw from the national squad, as reporter David Ornstein explained the decisions ahead of the extended international break.

Reasons for the withdrawals

Ornstein said Palmer will miss the break because of load‑management concerns. The Chelsea midfielder had just completed a full 90 minutes in Brentford’s 3‑0 defeat on Friday. Managing his minutes is intended to preserve his fitness for the upcoming internationals.

Rashford’s situation stems from a hip issue that Manchester United have been monitoring since the World Cup. He was taken off in United’s 1‑1 draw with Fulham on Sunday, prompting manager Michael Carrick to note the need for caution. Ornstein expects the forward to pull out of Tuchel’s 27‑man squad.

Mainoo is listed as a likely absentee through injury after playing 80 minutes against Fulham. Tuchel had pledged him minutes during the break, acknowledging his disappointment at not featuring at the World Cup. The midfielder’s withdrawal is therefore a blow to the manager’s plans.

Tuchel has already refreshed the squad for the pause, recalling Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Palmer after they missed the World Cup. The changes aim to inject fresh energy ahead of four Nations League matches in the coming weeks.

On X, Ornstein wrote: ‘Cole Palmer poised to withdraw from England squad due to load management. Marcus Rashford will be assessed for hip issue handled by Man Utd since World Cup but expected to pull out. Kobbie Mainoo also among likely absentees through injury.’ The tweet summarised the likely absences for the upcoming squad.

England’s Nations League programme

England’s first Nations League game is against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September. The side will then travel to face Czechia and Croatia before meeting the Czech Republic again later in the window. The remaining group fixtures are scheduled for November.

The NEXT fixtures will test the depth of Tuchel’s refreshed roster and may dictate his selections for the November matches. Tuchel will have to decide whether to rely on younger options such as Elliot Anderson.
