Liverpool Wharton chase stalls amid congested midfield

Liverpool’s pursuit of Adam Wharton has hit a standstill, as the club has been told that a major midfield departure is required before any high‑profile signing can be added. The condition, reported by the Media Matters for Anfield Index, ties the interest in Crystal Palace’s midfielder to the exit of a player such as Alexis Mac Allister or Curtis Jones.

Liverpool’s midfield is described as congested, leaving little room for another high‑profile signing. The club admire Adam Wharton, but a departure is required before any expensive midfielder can be added.

The Media Matters for Anfield Index saw Dave Davis and David Lynch flag uncertainty over Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones while assessing Adam Wharton as a potential target. Lynch explained that any significant addition depends on creating space through a major departure.

Liverpool’s immediate priorities remain strengthening attack and defence, with midfield recruitment viewed differently because the squad already boasts numerous central options. The congested midfield reduces urgency for new arrivals.

Lynch suggested that departures of players such as Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones or Alexis Mac Allister could turn the summer into a period of heavy spending and squad turnover. He added that the club cannot control whether suitable offers will materialise.

Alexis Mac Allister’s future remains uncertain, with Lynch questioning his physical condition after a difficult campaign. Lynch said, “I think they should push Mac Allister out the door if they can because I think I’m concerned about where he’s up to physically.”

Curtis Jones also faces an unclear future, with intermittent interest from Inter and a possible contractual decision if he does not sign a new deal. Lynch remarked, “If Jones isn’t going to sign a new contract, you maybe just have to make a decision there.”

Wharton’s valuation has risen, yet Lynch doubted whether his style fits Andoni Iraola’s system, questioning his ability to cover enough ground and perform defensive duties. He added, “If Mac Allister goes, maybe there’s an opening there for Wharton to come in.”

Until a departure creates the necessary space, Liverpool are unlikely to add another starting‑quality midfielder, leaving their midfield plans on hold. Consequently, interest in Wharton remains theoretical and contingent on a major exit.
