Liverpool weigh January recall of Ndukwe while Araujo option hangs
Liverpool will convene THIS WEEKEND to decide whether to activate the January recall clause for defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who is currently on loan at Levante. The meeting also comes as the Reds evaluate the €55m / £47m purchase option for right‑back Ronald Araujo, a summer loan signing from Barcelona’s captain.
Loan to Levante and work‑permit hurdle
Liverpool sent the towering 6ft 6in centre‑half to LaLiga side Levante because he lacked the points needed for an English work permit. The Austrian could not feature in competitive matches for Liverpool until the requirement was met. Levante provided the platform for him to accumulate the necessary points, and the loan was arranged as a business partnership with the Spanish club.
Ndukwe spent his first three games on Levante’s bench, then made two substitute appearances before earning three successive starts. Only a single LaLiga appearance was required to satisfy the work‑permit criteria, and his recent starts have now secured eligibility for competitive football in England. His three successive starts have come after the initial bench period, demonstrating rapid integration.
Araujo’s impact and purchase clause
Ronald Araujo has been an instant hit at Anfield, solidifying the right‑back position that had troubled the Reds for over a year. His performances have prompted Liverpool to consider exercising the €55m / £47m option to buy him outright later in the campaign. The clause remains exercisable later in the campaign, giving the club flexibility and signalling a long‑term solution at right‑back.
Meeting THIS WEEKEND to decide future
Over the summer Liverpool completed a high‑profile loan of Barcelona’s captain, securing his services for the entire campaign. The captain’s presence is expected to bolster leadership on the pitch throughout the season. The move was presented as a statement of intent by the club, adding experience to a squad already bolstered by other signings.
According to Austria, Liverpool will hold talks with representatives of Ifeanyi Ndukwe’s agency, More than Sport by AS1, during the meeting THIS WEEKEND. The discussions will map out whether the young defender should return to Anfield in January now that he meets the work‑permit requirements. Both sides aim to finalise the arrangement before the January transfer window closes.
The club also arranged temporary exits for other talents, sending Harvey Elliott to Valencia while Ndukwe heads to Levante. The Weekend schedule also includes reviewing the loan of Harvey Elliott. These departures were part of Liverpool’s broader strategy to secure playing time for emerging talents.
If Liverpool elects to recall Ndukwe, the Reds will add a physically imposing centre‑back to their squad for the second half of the season. Simultaneously, a decision on Araujo’s purchase clause will determine whether the Uruguayan remains a long‑term solution at right‑back, shaping the defensive outlook for the campaign.
