Liverpool turn to 21‑year‑old to plug defence amid injury crisis
Liverpool have confirmed they will sign a 21‑year‑old sensation as a centre‑back for the 2026‑27 Premier League campaign. Manager Andoni Iraola identified the youngster as a replacement amid a spate of injuries that have left senior options scarce.
Defence is one of Liverpool's weakest areas, especially now that Joe Gomez has been sidelined again. Iraola also said three other senior centre‑backs are unavailable, leaving the club with no senior centre‑backs to feature.
Andoni Iraola's arrival will certainly give the team a boost. However, the number of injuries he must manage means there is still not enough quality among Liverpool's ranks at the moment.
The summer transfer window has been open for well over a month. Liverpool's chance to make deals is slowly disappearing, so major moves need to be made quickly.
The 21‑year‑old has only spent a season with Cesc Fabregas' men in Serie A. His performances have attracted interest from clubs worldwide and rumours of a possible return to Real Madrid.
Cesc Fabregas is lining up a move for Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí, opening the door for a Jacobo Ramon exit. Juventus are also keen on Lucumí, and Ramon could be a great signing for Andoni Iraola, potentially helping to replace Van Dijk next summer.
The cost of the Spaniard remains unclear, but Liverpool must open negotiations NOW and act swiftly before the window shuts. The signing aims to plug the immediate defensive void while future moves may further reshape the back line.
