Liverpool’s midfield rebuild hinges on €70m bid for Bouaddi

🇬🇧

Liverpool must reinforce a weakened midfield after a difficult 2025/26 campaign and the departure of Arne Slot on May 30. The club have set their sights on 18‑year‑old Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose commanding display against Brazil and role in Morocco’s 1‑0 win over Scotland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have raised his profile.

Andoni Iraola, newly appointed head coach, will oversee recruitment as Liverpool rebuilds under a new tactical vision. The club’s strategy historically favours signing talent before market values explode, a pattern that could shape Bouaddi’s acquisition.

Bouaddi has already amassed 96 senior appearances for Lille, starting 28 of their 34 Ligue 1 matches last season, a remarkable tally for an 18‑year‑old. His composure, athleticism and maturity on the international stage suggest he can handle senior‑football pressure.

Lille president Olivier Letang confirmed the club is “ready to sell” Bouaddi this summer, but only if a minimum €70 million (£60.3 million) fee is met, with the price potentially rising in a bidding war. Chelsea, Paris Saint‑Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also been linked to the midfielder, intensifying competition for Liverpool.

Lille would prefer a one‑year loan‑back, keeping Bouaddi for the 2026/27 season, or alternatively a pre‑agreement that secures the player ahead of the 2027/28 campaign. This structure allows Lille to bank a major fee while retaining a key player for another year.

For Liverpool, the challenge is balancing the heavy outlay against an immediate need to bolster Iraola’s squad, especially after last season’s collapse. Accepting the loan‑back clause could frustrate supporters eager for instant impact, but the long‑term upside may justify the investment.

Ben Jacobs’ report suggests Liverpool must decide quickly; delaying could trigger a price increase or see the player slip to a rival. The next steps involve negotiating the fee, the loan‑back terms, and securing the midfielder before the summer window closes.
