Liverpool’s midfield overhaul hinges on Nyoni’s loan to Swansea

🇬🇧

Liverpool face a midfield void after the likely departures of Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, prompting manager Andoni Iraola to consider a loan for 19‑year‑old Trey Nyoni to give the club the depth it needs for the upcoming season.

Andoni Iraola, appointed after Arne Slot’s exit, will start preseason with a clean slate, reshaping Liverpool’s midfield strategy. Retaining the same squad members would be unexpected given the club’s intent to refresh its options.

The club’s youth pipeline includes Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, whose potential arrivals could further tighten competition for midfield places. Their presence would make it harder for existing youngsters such as Trey Nyoni, Stefan Bajcetic and James McConnell to secure regular first‑team minutes.

Nyoni, who joined Liverpool from Leicester in 2023, made his senior debut at just 16 under Jurgen Klopp. Under Arne Slot he saw reduced opportunities, playing only around 20 minutes in the Premier League campaign.

The Liverpool Echo Championship side Swansea City, now managed by former Liverpool coach Vitor Matos, are targeting Nyoni for a temporary move. A loan to the Championship would align with the player’s need for senior football beyond academy level.

“Trey Nyoni, the 18-year-old midfielder who made 14 senior appearances this term, has previously been wanted by Championship side Swansea City for a temporary move,” the report reads. The report adds that Nyoni, now 19, signed a professional deal in the summer of 2025 and was expected to progress, yet he logged only a handful of appearances this season.

If Iraola cannot guarantee Nyoni regular Premier League action, a loan to Swansea appears the most viable route, though it hinges on securing a suitable agreement and the player’s adaptation to Championship intensity. The outcome will shape Liverpool’s midfield depth heading into the next campaign.
