Liverpool’s £750,000 gamble on Colombian prodigy at Anfield

Liverpool have confirmed a £750,000 deal for 17‑year‑old Colombian playmaker Samuel Martinez, who has chosen an Anfield move. The fee marks a straightforward investment and a sensible profile for the Reds, according to club statements.

The signing was completed from Atletico Nacional after Martinez travelled to England with his family and agent Daniel Neumuller. He passed a medical over the weekend, sealing the agreement.

Because of international age regulations, Martinez will not formally join Liverpool’s Academy until the 2027‑28 season, as he does not turn 18 until April 2027. The club therefore moved early to secure his rights.

Martinez is an attacking midfielder by trade, comfortable as a number 10 and capable of drifting in from wide areas. That flexibility is highlighted as a key attribute for Liverpool’s future plans.

Liverpool stated: “Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional.” The club added: “The 17‑year‑old attacking midfielder will join the Reds’ Academy ranks ahead of the 2027‑28 season, after a move to bring him to the club was completed.”

Martinez starred for Colombia as they won the U17 South American Championship in April, featuring in all six games and registering three assists, including one in the 3‑0 semi‑final defeat of Brazil and another in the 4‑0 final victory over Argentina.

Bayern Munich were also reported to be keen, but Martinez chose Liverpool, underscoring his belief in the Anfield pathway. The decision reflects both the player’s ambition and Liverpool’s scouting reach.

Atletico Nacional secured a sell‑on clause as part of the deal, and Martinez is expected to feature for Colombia again at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year. Liverpool now wait for the youngster to mature within their system.

The £750,000 fee therefore represents a calculated gamble by the Reds, aiming to nurture a Colombian talent whose performances at youth international level have already raised his stock.
