Liverpool’s £100m winger hunt reveals Reds’ desperate need for pace
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are poised to sign an elite winger for a fee that could exceed £100 million, marking a blockbuster move for the Reds. The deal, confirmed by the renowned transfer journalist, reflects Liverpool’s urgent push to bolster a floundering wide attack after a disappointing season.
The Reds’ production out wide last season was described as pretty awful, with a clear lack of pace across the flanks. This deficiency has been identified as a key weakness that the club aims to remedy this summer.
The problem was amplified by Mohamed Salah leaving the club, removing a key figure from the attack. Despite what the club called his worst campaign, Salah still contributed six goals and six assists, figures that outshine many potential replacements.
Liverpool have signalled they are willing to shop in the top bracket this summer, targeting elite talent. The club’s previous target, Yan Diomande, opted for a move to Paris Saint‑Germain, prompting a pivot toward other options.
Anfield Watch reported in April that Liverpool identified Bradley Barcola as a market opportunity as his contract approaches its end. Barcola’s performances at the World Cup have drawn interest, positioning him as a prime candidate for the Reds.
Fabrizio Romano wrote, "Understand Liverpool remain the club showing most concrete interest in Bradley Barcola," he writes. "No truth in [Barcola] links, LFC deal depends on conditions for the exit as price will be set by PSG. "No talks over new contract so far."
If the deal proceeds, it will likely cost Liverpool over £100 million, a price PSG are unlikely to lower. The move would give the Reds a high‑profile winger while forcing the English club to balance a hefty outlay against their need for pace on the wings.
