Liverpool may target Everton defender Branthwaite

Liverpool are tipped to make a move for Everton centre‑back Jarrad Branthwaite, with a reported price tag of around £80 million. The potential signing would directly challenge Man Utd’s own pursuit of the defender.
Branthwaite has been on Man Utd’s radar for more than two years. In the summer of 2024 the Manchester‑based Red Devils offered Everton £35 million plus add‑ons, later raising the bid to £50 million, but both proposals were turned down.
United's long‑standing interest
Everton valued the Englishman at roughly £70 million at that time. Football Insider now says the Toffees are asking about £80 million, describing him as one of the Premier League’s best centre‑backs.
United are said to be targeting a left‑back, a right‑back and two central defenders to reshape their backline next season. Such arrivals would allow them to move on from Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire.
Liverpool's strategic motives
Liverpool’s interest adds a new dimension, as the Merseyside club may find the chase harder because of the rivalry with Everton. FI journalist Pete O’Rourke said: “Clubs are continuing to have a look at Branthwaite because he’s a top player.” He added that “He’s had his progress hampered by injuries in the last 18 months or so, but looks to be back fully fit now.”
He noted that Manchester United are long‑term admirers and tried to sign him a couple of summers ago, but Everton rejected the derisory bids. Branthwaite signed a new deal last summer, keeping him at Everton until 2030.
For Liverpool, securing Branthwaite would help plan for life after captain Virgil van Dijk, who is in the latter stages of his career. He could partner with Jeremy Jacquet at Anfield and aid young centre‑backs Giovanni Leoni and Ifeanyi Ndukwe.
Andoni Iraola’s Everton side also admire the Englishman and have hinted at a possible move in 2027. Branthwaite has been named as a potential target for Eddie Howe if he takes over at United, while Michael Carrick is set to stay in charge for United’s upcoming trip to Chelsea, Laurie Whitwell confirmed. Liverpool have additionally been linked with a Brighton centre‑half.
