Liverpool investigates Gakpo's ankle injury after Nations League loss

Liverpool has confirmed that Dutch forward Cody Gakpo has suffered an ankle injury during the Netherlands' away match against Serbia in the Nations League on Sunday, and that the club is now further investigating the injury. The medical staff of the Premier League club will determine the nature and the expected recovery time.

According to the official club website, it concerns an ankle injury. Liverpool reported that Gakpo, who is currently wearing number six for the team, is returning to Anfield for further medical examination. “Cody Gakpo has withdrawn from the Dutch national team due to an ankle injury. He is now returning to Liverpool for further examination by the medical staff at the training centre,” the club said.

The KNVB had earlier on Monday announced that Gakpo would miss the last two Nations League fixtures, against Greece on Thursday and Serbia on Sunday. The association did not specify which injury the former PSV player had sustained.

In the match against Serbia, Fulham midfielder Saša Lukic made a hard challenge on Gakpo in the central circle in the twelfth minute. The left‑winger, who had secured a 1‑1 draw against Germany on Thursday, limped off the pitch and later indicated that he could not continue.

Gakpo joins a long list of injured Dutch forwards. Donyell Malen and Justin Kluivert had already withdrawn for this international break. Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey started against Germany on Thursday, but fell after half an hour and was replaced by debutant Mexx Meerdink. Xavi Simons is still injured with his knee.

Liverpool resumes the Premier League on Sunday 11 October with a home match against league leaders Manchester City. The club hopes that the medical assessment of Gakpo will be completed before that date.
