Liverpool eye Branthwaite as Van Dijk successor

Liverpool eye Branthwaite as Van Dijk successor

Liverpool have identified a gap in their long‑term defensive plan, with veteran Virgil van Dijk ageing and no clear successor, prompting the club to eye Everton’s highly rated centre‑back Jarrad Branthwaite as a potential £80m Transfer that could reshape the Merseyside balance.

Valuation and market interest

TEAMTALK Everton value Branthwaite at around £80m, a figure that reflects his standing among Premier League defenders. The source adds that the centre‑back remains highly regarded by leading clubs, keeping his name at the top of many scouting lists.

Manchester United have already tested Everton’s resolve, offering £35m plus add‑ons in 2024 and later a £50m bid, both of which were rejected. Their long‑term admiration for the player means the interest is likely to continue, especially as they plan a defensive rebuild.

Everton’s contract stance

Everton appear unpressured to sell, having secured Branthwaite on a contract that runs until 2030. The club’s valuation and contract length suggest they will only consider an offer that matches their expectations.

Despite injury setbacks over the past 18 months, Branthwaite is now reported to be fully fit, further enhancing his market appeal.

Liverpool’s long‑term plan

Liverpool’s interest is described as admiration at this stage, with a possible move envisaged for 2027 rather than an immediate scramble. Under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool are expected to continue evolving their back line, and Branthwaite’s left‑sided profile fits that vision.

Succession planning around elite central defenders is essential for Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk still pivotal but ageing, making a young, physically dominant option attractive.

"Clubs are continuing to have a look at Branthwaite because he’s a top player," said Pete O’Rourke. "He’s had his progress hampered by injuries in the last 18 months or so, but looks to be back fully fit now. Manchester United are long‑term admirers of his and tried to sign him a couple of summers ago, but a couple of derisory bids were rejected by Everton, who are quite relaxed about the whole situation. He signed a new deal last summer, so he’s under contract at Everton until 2030. There is always going to be interest in top players like Jarrad Branthwaite. Man United, we know, are probably gonna have a big restructure of their defence, so I’m sure that Branthwaite will be pretty high up their list."

The prospect of Liverpool entering the picture could complicate Man Utd’s plans, as any genuine Liverpool involvement would be notable for the rarity of business involving Everton’s top assets. Monitoring the situation remains essential, given the high fee and the strategic implications for both Merseyside rivals.
