Lisandro Martínez puts technical director Jason Wilcox under fire after Champions League defeat

In the cold dressing room of Manchester United, the voice of defender Lisandro Martínez could be heard, who after the 2‑0 defeat to Atlético Madrid named technical director Jason Wilcox by name. The criticism came straight after a disastrous start to the Champions League match, in which Pablo Barrios scored within the first minute.

Defender condemns club management

Martínez, who represents Argentina, described United's performance as “very bad, very bad”. He said that the defeat reflects the current state of the club and that more is expected from the technical director. According to him, United should have invested more over the summer to remain competitive at the highest level.

Player performances and consequences

After a red card for Leny Yoro, Ademola Lookman completed the score, but United remained winless for the fifth consecutive match. Michael Carrick, who manages the side, saw his record of twelve wins in seventeen games from last season quickly fade. Martínez emphasized that a team cannot continue to rely on the approach of a previous manager and wondered what else must change.

United brought in, among others, Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and the “Red Devil” Youri Tielemans last summer, but this season has recorded only two official wins. In the Premier League the club is also enduring the worst start in forty years.

Afterwards Carrick refused to respond immediately, because he had not yet seen the full interview and wanted the emotions of the defeat to settle. He indicated that he first wants to know exactly what Martínez said before any steps are considered.
