United face backlash over Martinez’s board criticism after Madrid loss

Should Man Utd punish Lisandro Martinez for his post‑match outburst? The Argentina international sparked a firestorm after Manchester United fell 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, openly criticising the club’s board and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Martinez’s explosive interview

In the press conference in Madrid, 28‑year‑old Martinez said, “Really poor. Really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes it is a reflection of of how our club is at the moment.” He added that United’s “fantastic season last season” raised expectations for greater investment and stronger squad depth.

Transfer window frustrations

Martinez lamented that United made only four signings in the summer – three midfielders and a backup goalkeeper – leaving manager Michael Carrick to “put square pegs in round holes” early in his first season as permanent manager.

Supporters’ reaction

Fans have praised Martinez for speaking truth to power, with many echoing his call for more investment and a stronger technical direction from Jason Wilcox.

Criticism from former players

Former captain Wayne Rooney accused the defender of disrespecting teammates, while Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher labelled the comments “out of order”.

The debate now centres on whether United’s hierarchy will act on Martinez’s demands or risk further dissent within the Red Devils squad.
