Lens fans enraged as red card fuels PSG comeback in Trophée
Lensois saw their Trophée des Champions hopes crumble after 18‑year‑old defender Kyllian Antonio received a straight red card, leaving the RC Lens side reduced and their lead in jeopardy. The incident occurred at Stade Bollaert as the match against Paris Saint‑Germain unfolded.
Red card controversy
Kyllian Antonio was shown a direct red card in the 41st minute for a tackle on Maghnes Akliouche, with referee Jérémie Pignard making the decision and the VAR team not intervening. The 18‑year‑old central defender exited the pitch in tears while supporters of the Sang et Or shouted “C’est trop sévère” on the Ligue 1+ broadcast. The decision left the Lens side a man down just as they were defending a 1‑0 lead.
At the moment of the dismissal Lens were ahead 1‑0 in the ChampionsLens-PSG encounter, a lead that now appeared fragile. The early advantage had been built before the red card, but the numerical disadvantage threatened to overturn the momentum.

Paris Saint‑Germain, coached by Dino Toppmöller, responded after the break when Florian Thauvin scored the opening goal for the visitors. Thauvin capitalised on a centre‑shot from Matthieu Udol and a mis‑positioned Illia Zabarnyi to beat goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. The equaliser shifted the balance of the match.
Reactions poured in: Jean‑Louis Leca, sporting director of RC Lens, condemned the referee, saying “You have the gift of killing a match”. Florian Thauvin added his frustration, remarking “It’s a trophy we play, not a friendly”. Daniel Riolo later wrote on social media that “The Ligue 1 hasn’t resumed that the circus of red cards is already in place, but why not copy the excellent World Cup refereeing?”.
