Leeds United break transfer record to secure James Trafford

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Leeds United have moved to fill a glaring gap in goal after the free‑transfer exits of Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow, sealing a £40 million guaranteed package plus add‑ons for Manchester City’s James Trafford. The record‑breaking fee is billed as the right move for the Whites.

The £40 million guaranteed sum, with further add‑ons, shatters Leeds United’s previous transfer ceiling. It eclipses the £36 million paid for Georginio Rutter in 2023, establishing a new benchmark for the club’s spending.

David Ornstein first broke the news, and Fabrizio Romano later confirmed the signature and the financial terms. Both journalists cited The Athletic as the source of the details.

Trafford had signalled his wish to leave Manchester City as early as April, seeking regular weekly football and naming Elland Road as his preferred destination. Personal terms were agreed days ago, ahead of his medical.

Newcastle United briefly explored a move but withdrew once Trafford’s intentions were clear, leaving Leeds as the sole suitor. No other club is reported to be in the frame at this stage.

Leeds’ goalkeeping department was left thin after Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow departed on free transfers, leaving Lucas Perri as the only senior option. Torino have shown interest in Perri, underscoring the need for a top‑tier keeper.

The 23‑year‑old England international has already collected domestic silverware at Manchester City, featuring in the FA Cup and EFL Cup triumphs. He honed his craft on loan at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before establishing himself as a standout talent at Burnley.

The signing gives Leeds United a reliable stopper with a high ceiling, while Manchester City secure a substantial fee and a future release clause that could yield further income from any later sale. Both sides view the deal as a strategic step forward.
