Le pari raté de Fonseca : Je pensais à la défense contre Sparta

On Tuesday, Olympique Lyonnais were beaten 1-2 by Sparta Prague in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, after Paulo Fonseca fielded a largely defensive side to cover several absences. The Portuguese coach explained that the majority of the lineup had a defensive vocation, a decision taken to compensate for missing players.

The tactical option, intended to shore up the back line, failed to produce the expected effect as Sparta Prague managed to find the net twice, leaving Lyonnais with the smallest possible margin of defeat. The match unfolded without the attacking width the coach had hoped for, and the defensive emphasis did not translate into control of the game.

At the final whistle, Fonseca took the microphone to detail his reasoning. "After the last preparation match, we had to choose the players who were best prepared to start this game. We did not have the wingers to begin this encounter. I think Kaïl (Boudache) and Julien (Duranville) are not yet ready for a match of this dimension. Malick (Fofana) and Ernest (Nuamah) are not yet physically prepared enough to start. So we played with the experienced players we had available," he said, calling the loss a logical defeat.

Sidney Govou, former OL striker and Canal+ consultant, added his perspective on the halftime situation. "At halftime, Paulo Fonseca's assistant said the system had been misunderstood by the players. Certainly, but was it the moment to change, to find a new system? Were the Lyonnais physically weaker today? I think it's a mix of all that, and OL leaves here with a logical defeat," he assessed.

The Gones will have another opportunity to reverse the situation on Tuesday next at Parc OL for the second leg against Sparta Prague. That match represents their last chance to reach the Champions League play‑offs and keep alive the dream of qualifying for the group stage.
