Kompany leaves hospital, Eberl guarantees a swift return to the bench

Vincent Kompany has left the hospital, technical director Max Eberl of Bayern Munich confirmed shortly before the cup tie against 1. FC Magdeburg. The Belgian felt unwell on Friday during training, after earlier complaints of a viral infection, and was told by Eberl that his meninges were irritated.

Despite the sudden illness, Kompany remains one of the most successful coaches of the German record champions. Since his appointment in 2024 he has won the league title in the past two seasons and currently sits at the top of the Bundesliga. He also led Bayern to the DFB‑Cup title.

Coaching history

Before his arrival in Munich, Kompany coached RSC Anderlecht and later Burnley in England. At both clubs he emphasized possession and pressing, although he did not win major trophies there.

As a player the 89‑cap international of the Red Devils experienced his greatest successes at Manchester City, where he won the league title four times, among other achievements. He also had two spells with Anderlecht and one spell with Hamburger SV.

Eberl stated in an interview with ARD that Kompany’s meninges were irritated, but assured: “I am sure he will be back on the bench with us soon.” The club hopes the coach will have recovered in time for the match against Magdeburg.

The contrast between the medical setback and Bayern’s undiminished ambition underlines the resilience of both the coach and the organization, and promises an exciting cup evening despite the brief absence.
