Klopp remains goalless as Germany fails again in Thessaloniki

On Sunday, the German national team had to accept a goalless 0-0 draw against Greece at the Toumba‑Stadium in Thessaloniki. Jürgen Klopp, the coach, was again without a goal for his team after the 0‑1 loss in Augsburg. The match was part of the Nations League‑group stage.

Standings in the Nations League

After four matchdays, Germany has five points and ranks third in Group 2. The Netherlands and Greece each sit three points ahead, with eight points. Thus the German side remains in the race for the group title behind the two favourites.

Line‑up and Changes

After the 2‑0 win over Serbia, Klopp altered three starting spots: David Raum, Lennart Karl and Jonathan Burkardt each received a place in the starting eleven. On the Greek side, Konstantinos Koulierakis and Alexandros Kyziridis were included in the starting lineup for the first time.

Match Progress and Chances

In the 2nd minute, Jonas Urbig denied a header from Greek captain Giorgos Masouras. Jonathan Burkardt had a promising chance in the 32nd minute, but it did not result in a goal due to a handball by goalkeeper Tom Bischof. Philipp Treu delivered a pass in the 56th minute, while Derry Scherhant narrowly missed the target in the 65th attempt.

A potential goal by Burkardt after just over half an hour was ruled out by VAR and referee Clément Turpin for a forward pass infringement. Despite several offensive actions, the German team remained goalless.

Greece also produced dangerous attacks, especially in the opening minutes, but the German defence held firm. The Greek defence, led by Masouras, prevented any clear scoring chance until the end.

In the upcoming November break, Germany will host the Netherlands and travel to face Serbia. Greece still has an away match against the Netherlands and a home game against Serbia.

Klopp appeared nervous after the match, as the long‑awaited revenge after the 0‑1 defeat in Augsburg fell short again. However, the coach emphasized that the team had performed dominantly despite the lack of goals.

In the same Nations‑League round, the Oranje defeated Serbia at home 2‑1, with goals from Teun Koopmeiners and Joshua Zirkzee.
