Klopp picks Nübel, Ter Stegen stays on the bench against Greece

No Ter Stegen between the posts in Germany's second Nations League duel under Jürgen Klopp, who on Saturday told the German press that Alexander Nübel will get the starting spot against Greece. Ter Stegen, who recently was preferred during the draw with the Netherlands, remains on the bench.

Klopp emphasized that leaving out Ter Stegen does not mean he has been demoted to second choice. The Ajax goalkeeper was preferred during the draw with the Netherlands, but the national coach wants Nübel to feature in the upcoming Nations League match.

‘I heard that Marc received criticism. That surprised me after a match where the opponent's coach said he had saved us. He held out excellently, but played a ball twice that he should not have played,’ said Klopp.

Since this summer, Alexander Nübel has been on loan at Besiktas, but on Sunday he will have the opportunity to stand in the German goal against Greece.

‘He also deserves to play. I hope he enjoys it and keeps his goal clean,’ Klopp said about the young goalkeeper.

Klopp also discussed the possible role of Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz. Due to Jamal Musiala's injury, Wirtz was brought into the squad early, but he will not appear at kickoff on Sunday, his trainer reported.

‘That would be the worst thing we could do right now, to select him without sufficient training hours,’ warned the national coach.

He acknowledged that Wirtz is not in the best phase of his career: ‘He arrived at Liverpool at a very unfortunate moment, but has learned a lot in his first year. Attacking players always need a team around them that functions well. And anyone who loves football can still see how outstanding Wirtz is as a player.’
