Kevin De Bruyne under fire for being in Paris despite suspension

Kevin De Bruyne under fire for being in Paris despite suspension

Kevin De Bruyne recently faced a lot of criticism after he, despite a suspension for the Nations League match against France, was present in Paris on Monday evening. The Belgian midfielder was in the French capital together with Youri Tielemans to support the Red Devils and offer comfort after the 4‑1 defeat to Les Bleus.

Suspension and presence in Paris

De Bruyne and Tielemans incurred a suspension in the Nations League due to an excess of yellow cards, which meant that, according to the rules, they were not allowed to play against France. Nevertheless, both players continued training with the Red Devils and traveled to Paris to support the squad. On the evening after the match we saw De Bruyne standing explicitly next to Roméo Lavia.

Criticism from Italy

De Bruyne's presence in France attracted strong criticism in Italy. Italian media argued that he did not return directly to Napoli, where he also plays a key role, and pointed to earlier periods in which his enthusiasm for the Red Devils seemed diminished. However, the criticism was less harsh for Tielemans, who had already been present at Wales despite an injury.

Significance for the Red Devils

The incident shows a new elan of the Red Devils: players remain with the national team even when they are not allowed to play. De Bruyne, one of the few remaining members of the golden generation, uses his experience to guide a new cohort. Mark van Bommel, the current head coach, thus gains an important pillar of support.

The coach has come to appreciate De Bruyne for more than just his play on the pitch; he sees him as a mentor who strengthens the team spirit. Tielemans, captain of the new generation, also takes on his responsibility and remains present, which is deemed logical.

The ultimate goal of the Red Devils is to be competitive again at a European Championship within two years. A stable presence of players like De Bruyne and Tielemans should support that ambition and enable them to focus on international breaks.

Although the Italian criticism remains inevitable, De Bruyne’s decision to continue supporting the Red Devils is seen by many as a positive step. His commitment can benefit both his own prospects in Italy and Belgium's collective ambition.
