Mark van Bommel notes progress but raises doubts about Belgium

Mark van Bommel emphasized the positive points to take from Belgium's international break, while noting that several aspects remain problematic. He recalled that the flow of the game was interesting, especially in Italy and against Turkey. However, the coach lamented the lack of tactical solutions, particularly in the decisive phases.

Game flow in Italy and against Turkey

The attack displayed more fluidity and directness than it had under Rudi Garcia, thanks to the contributions of Mika Godts and Kevin De Bruyne, both in excellent form. This dynamism allowed Belgium to create chances more regularly, even though the intensity sought by Van Bommel could not be maintained for the full 90 minutes.

Van Bommel also noted that the intensity, so dear to his approach, was already evident, although it did not last the entire match. He recalled that similar compliments had been given to Domenico Tedesco after his first international break, highlighting a continuity of expectations.

Tactical challenges and lack of solutions

In three out of four matches, Belgium gave way in the final quarter‑hour, with Mark van Bommel unable to find an immediate solution. In Italy, the changes imposed by the Dutch coach disrupted the side, which eventually broke down and missed a chance to equalise against a revitalised opponent.

Against France, the forays of Zidane’s stars made the difference, while Van Bommel reacted too late, pulling off struggling players such as De Ketelaere, Moreira, Vanaken or Lavia too late, or leaving them on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, like De Cuyper and Castagne.

The stated objective remains to hold the full 90 minutes with the intensity required to compete with top‑level teams. Van Bommel specified that in November, barely a month away, the situation will be the same, as the players have been busy with club fixtures, which will demand greater management.

Across the six matches, Belgium fielded 18 different names, including three suspensions and the baffling starting‑lineup inclusion of Maarten Vandevoordt. Some bench players, such as Brandon Mechele, barely got a chance, and Loïs Openda received only ten minutes in total, which was deemed almost disrespectful.

Mandela Keita, nevertheless favoured by Van Bommel, only earned his first minutes at the very end of the match in Paris. In light of these observations, the coach is already considering a plan B to better manage the squad and meet upcoming tactical demands.
