Kane joins Shilton with 125 caps for England

Harry Kane, the 33‑year‑old striker, starts on Tuesday evening in the Nations League match against the Czech Republic and will thereby play his 125th cap for England, matching the record of former goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

Peter Shilton wore the England shirt 125 times between 1970 and 1990. For Kane this means he is now on 124 caps, one fewer than Shilton.

Kane made his debut on 27 March 2015 as an England international. The upcoming match brings him level with the legendary goalkeeper.

Reactions from former internationals

Former England international Paul Robinson said that only after Kane’s career it will become clear how important he was for England. ‘Harry Kane is an English great’, the BBC quoted him as saying, and added that in modern times people tend to view the past through rose‑coloured glasses.

Ex‑midfielder Danny Murphy confirmed Robinson’s assessment: ‘Kane is the greatest goal‑scorer England has ever had. No one can take that away from him.’ He praised Kane’s statistics and long career as proof of his elite‑status.

According to both German and English media, Kane is nearing a new contract with Bayern München. The striker is currently tied down until the end of this season, but could sign until 2029.

The simultaneous milestone and contract negotiations underline both Kane’s historic impact for the England team and his future with the German league‑giant.
