Kane equals Shilton caps record as England eye Nations League quarters

England wrapped up a comfortable 3‑0 victory over Czechia at Wembley, securing their third straight win in the Nations League group and pushing the aggregate to 12‑0. The result leaves the Three Lions all but certain of a quarter‑final place.

Kane's record‑breaking night

Harry Kane equalled Peter Shilton’s England caps record, joining the legendary goalkeeper on the all‑time appearance list. He also added another two goals, taking his tally to 91 and extending his lead as the nation’s top scorer. Kane is now nine goals short of a century of goals, which currently do not count.

Vladimir Coufal’s own goal opened the scoring, giving England an early lead without needing a striker’s finish. Midfielder Morgan Rogers later supplied the decisive pass for Kane’s second strike, while James Anderson’s late run into the box produced a shot that rattled the crossbar. Kane managed the attack despite missing the usual supply from Anthony Gordon on the left.

Thomas Tuchel had given young keeper James Trafford the first two games of the international break, but veteran Jordan Pickford returned for the final two fixtures, bringing experience and composure to the back line. Pickford’s presence allowed England to maintain clean sheets throughout the match. It marked England’s third consecutive clean sheet in the competition.

Right‑back Trent Alexander‑Arnold has not featured for England against any opponent other than Czechia for the past 16 months, highlighting his limited involvement since the Spain defeat. His absence has opened opportunities for younger options.

During the second half Tuchel appeared visibly annoyed after receiving a booking that will rule him out of England’s next month’s clash with Croatia, adding a disciplinary note to an otherwise smooth evening.

England's path to the quarter‑finals

The 3‑0 win raised England’s group tally to a 12‑0 aggregate, confirming three victories from three matches. Their earlier 3‑2 loss to Spain now feels like a distant memory, and the Lions are poised to join the Nations League quarter‑finals.

Overall, the performance reinforced England’s status as a dominant force in the competition, with the Three Lions displaying depth across the squad and confirming their ambition to progress further.

Midfielder Hall has used the past ten days to make a strong case for regular selection, delivering solid performances in midfield. Meanwhile, Alex Scott’s fitness remains a question, with speculation about his place in the pecking order once he returns to full health.
