Juventus feels loss as Spalletti’s 93‑year‑old mother passes
Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti is in mourning after his mother Ilva, who lived in their hometown near Empoli, died at the age of 93. The loss has been confirmed by the club, and Spalletti will miss today’s pre‑season training with Juventus FC.
“At age 11, I asked my mother to sew a giant Italian flag for me,” Spalletti said, recalling the memento he still carries onto the bench. “Now, I carry that flag with me onto the bench and hope to revive that dream, all together, so that this flag can be waved by all children just as I did.”
The flag was originally made to celebrate Italy’s 4‑3 World Cup victory over Germany in Mexico, a moment Spalletti described as a “fairy‑tale come true.” He has repeatedly credited Ilva for nurturing his passion for the sport throughout his playing and coaching career.
When Spalletti took charge of the Italy Nazionale in September 2023, he revealed that the flag remains his most treasured talisman. He now brings it to every match, hoping it will inspire the national side and remind him of his mother’s unwavering support.

Gian Piero Gasperini, Head Coach of AS Roma, embraced Spalletti prior to the Serie A clash between AS Roma and Juventus FC at Stadio Olimpico on MARCH 01, 2026 in Rome. The photo captured the two Head Coaches sharing a hug in front of the iconic stadium, underscoring the camaraderie despite the personal tragedy.
Tributes and condolences have poured in from clubs across Italy, with many noting Spalletti’s dedication to his family. The Juventus camp confirmed he will not travel to the training ground today, allowing him time to grieve with his loved ones.
Spalletti’s protectiveness of his mother was evident after a 2022 Serie A encounter between Napoli and Fiorentina, when he criticised fans for shouting insults about his mother. “They are professionally rude, staying behind the bench being offensive from start to finish,” he said, defending his family against the abuse.
