Julián Álvarez breaks silence, asks forgiveness from Atleti fans

The Argentine centre‑forward Julián Álvarez scored the only goal of the match, securing Atlético de Madrid's 1‑0 victory over RC Deportivo de A Coruña at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium on October 24, 2026, in the opening round of LaLiga EA Sports 2026/27.

That goal was his second of the season, after having opened the scoring in the Champions League against Stuttgart in a 1‑1 draw the previous Tuesday. However, the Atleti fans had expressed their displeasure during the opening matches, whistling and booing him for comments made in the summer.

Request for departure and lack of offer

During the World Cup, the Argentine spoke to ask the club to allow him to “fulfil his dream” of leaving the Rojiblancos. He said several parties from Barcelona showed interest, but no serious offer materialised.

The supporters, frustrated, continued to voice their anger in the subsequent matches. In response, Álvarez issued a statement:

“I want to apologise to our people for my words during the World Cup. It was a mistake on my part. As a fan I would also have been angry”.

Commitment to the team

After the final whistle, the striker told the media: “It was a mistake both in what I said and in the timing. As a fan, I understand the anger of the people and share it”. He added that he now must focus on working hard and improving his performance together with the squad.

Álvarez recalled that his first goal of the season came in the Champions League against Stuttgart and that the strike against Deportivo was his first LaLiga goal since February.

He concluded by thanking the supporters for their backing over the past weeks and emphasised that the team has “very important things to do” in the upcoming fixtures.
