Atletico Madrid’s win narrows gap as El Clasico looms

While the weekend’s spotlight will be on Sunday’s El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou, Atletico Madrid secured a vital 1‑0 win on Saturday, keeping them within two points of league leaders Barcelona. Canadian striker Jonathan David watched from the bench as his side celebrated.

Atletico Madrid's title push stays on track

Atletico Madrid’s Atleti beat Deportivo de A Coruña 1‑0, with Julián Alvarez finding the net in the 48th minute. The goal came from a low pass by Alejandro Grimaldo to the back post, swept in by Alvarez. The win moved Atletico to an 8‑1‑1 record after ten games, still two points behind Barcelona.

Jonathan David, the Canadian forward, did not feature in the Saturday win, remaining an unused sub. He had scored the winner in the Madrid derby last month, a moment that had hinted at a regular starting role. The presence of Alvarez, who also scored in the Champions League draw with the German club Stuttgart, adds competition for attacking spots.

Alvarez has publicly expressed a desire to join Barcelona this summer, a move that never materialised. Atleti supporters have booed him all season, yet his back‑to‑back goals may be winning some of them over again, a development that could limit David’s chances.

Atletico travel to Levante away next Saturday before facing Bayern Munich, represented by Alphonso Davies, on the following Tuesday. Canadian fans will be hoping both David and Alvarez feature in that mouth‑watering clash.

Reports suggest Atletico Madrid are keen to make Jonathan David’s transfer permanent, underscoring the club’s ambition to retain his talent amid the title race.
