Jovanovic sees bright future for the Oranje before Nations League duel
At the press conference in Athens, shortly before the Nations League‑duel, the 64‑year‑old Greek head coach Ivan Jovanovic spoke with enthusiasm about the Dutch national team. He stated that the Oranje belongs among the best football nations in Europe and is heading towards a bright future.
Jovanovic’s career and recent appointment
The 64‑year‑old Jovanovic started his second stint as head coach two years ago, this time with Greece. Prior to that, he was in charge of the United Arab Emirates between 2019 and 2020, a period he often describes as a learning step in his career.
Compliments for Xavi Hernández and the Dutch squad
Although the Serb has never played against the Oranje, Jovanovic praised Xavi Hernández’s squad. “They belong among the best teams in Europe,” he declared during the press meeting. He added: “Dutch football always has talented players and a bright future.”
Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis also spoke highly of the Oranje and specifically praised Mexx Meerdink for his performances.
Netherlands under pressure: Greek golden generation full of confidence
After the Netherlands’ victory over Germany in last Sunday’s Nations League, Greek enthusiasm for the upcoming duel has surged dramatically. There is a real rush for match tickets, something Jovanovic would like to see more often.
“Normally, people only show up when we play against big opponents,” Jovanovic noted, before he ruled out that the Dutch side could be beaten. “Since we can achieve big away victories, why shouldn’t we be able to do so at home?”
