Iraola doubts Gravenberch will be fit for Fenerbahce trip

Andoni Iraola said he has not ruled out Ryan Gravenberch returning for Liverpool this weekend, after confirming the Dutchman will miss the Champions League trip to Fenerbahce because of a heel injury.
Gravenberch was omitted from the 22‑man travelling squad that departed for Turkey on Tuesday morning, remaining on Merseyside for treatment. The manager gave an update on the 24‑year‑old’s condition at a press conference in Fenerbahce’s Chobani Stadium, which started over an hour late due to traffic in Istanbul.
Weekend availability uncertain
When asked whether Gravenberch could feature in Liverpool’s Sunday trip to Crystal Palace, Iraola replied it was a day‑to‑day matter, citing heel pain. He added that the player had felt discomfort during warm‑up against Arsenal and had not improved since, so the staff assess him daily. Iraola said that if Gravenberch were fit for the weekend it would be a “very good help”, but he could not confirm anything yet.
Selection implications and manager's reaction
Gravenberch was an unused substitute in Liverpool’s Sunday defeat to Arsenal, with 19‑year‑old Trey Nyoni starting in midfield, opening another chance for Nyoni against Fenerbahce. Iraola stressed that Nyoni must continue in his pre‑season role, staying ready for every game, and that he has been playing most matches lately.
He praised Nyoni’s progress, urging him to keep improving, learning and gaining experience, noting the youngster is in a very good place. After the Arsenal loss, Iraola expressed fury over a denied penalty involving Alexander Isak, saying he would tell his players to dive to provoke officials.
Iraola confirmed he had not contacted the refereeing body Pro Ref for an explanation, stating he lacked time. He added that with only two days between games, his focus remains on preparing for the Fenerbahce fixture and analysing the opposition.
