Investigation sidelines Premier League referee Simon Bennett

According to LIAM MORGAN, ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR, on 29 August 2026 a Premier League linesman has been suspended after being accused of inappropriate behaviour with a woman; the official, Simon Bennett, earns £110,000 a year, is married and has not refereed this season.

Bennett, 41, last officiated the line when Manchester United beat Brighton 3-0 away on the final day of last season. He has been a Premier League official since 2011 but has not taken part in any matches this campaign.

Bennett's long refereeing career

Before entering elite officiating, he worked as a teacher. He became a FIFA‑listed official in 2013 and later featured at the 2021 European Championships and the FA Cup final.

Investigation and official silence

An investigation was launched after concerns were raised over his conduct with a woman. A source told the Sun that he closed all his social media accounts and has essentially disappeared since his suspension.

The source said, “The investigation is into his inappropriate behaviour with a woman.” The allegation centres on his off‑field conduct with a woman.

Another comment noted, “It has obviously raised eyebrows in the refereeing world because it goes against the grain of the job itself.” The source said the situation has raised eyebrows among officials.

A further remark added, “Refs are supposed to ensure high standards on the pitch, so you'd hope they would do the same off the pitch.” The source argued that officials should uphold the same standards off the field.

The same source concluded, “But we have to await the findings of the investigation now.” The investigation’s outcome remains pending.

Pro Ref, formerly known as PGMOL, declined to comment when approached by Sport. Sport also contacted the Football Association for a statement.
