Infantino scraps FIFA Forward Enterprise amid confederation backlash

By 4AllFootball ·

Gianni Infantino announced on Saturday that FIFA is withdrawing its proposed private‑investment vehicle for the 2026 Coupe du Monde, a decision released in a FIFA communiqué at 07:19. The move ends the plan to raise private capital for football development worldwide.

The communiqué confirmed that the commercial society open to private investors, dubbed "FIFA Forward Enterprise", has been abandoned after generating strong hostility among member associations. FIFA cited the divisions the proposal created as incompatible with its original objectives.

Several confederations voiced opposition, with UEFA explicitly threatening to boycott the World Cup should the project proceed. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF also expressed clear hostility toward the initiative.

The stated aim of the project was to mobilise US$10 billion for football development over the next four years. "Le projet 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' avait pour objectif de jeter les bases d’un renforcement accru de associations membres de la FIFA et de notre sport à l’échelle mondiale, en particulier dans les pays où le besoin d’aide est le plus grand", wrote Infantino in the release.

Under the private‑company model, FIFA intended to allow investors to acquire roughly 20 % of the shares, targeting US$4.2 billion in capital on a valuation of US$20 billion for the future entity. The plan was presented as a way to boost resources for the sport globally.

Infantino stressed that the initiative would only move forward if a majority of FIFA member associations approved it, emphasizing a consultation process involving the FIFA Council, the confederations and all stakeholders. He reiterated that member support was a prerequisite for any further steps.

After listening to all points of view, Infantino said the project had clearly generated divisions that no longer served its purpose. "Our objective has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve," he added, underscoring the need for consensus.

Having led world football since 2016 and re‑elected in 2019 and 2027, Infantino confirmed he will stand for another term in 2027. He said he intends to bring all parties together again in the coming days and weeks, in a spirit of common interest, to continue developing football everywhere, especially in the nations that need it most. The announcement was also posted on the FifaAujourd'hui platform.
