Hull's Premier League gamble: signing ex-Rangers keeper Jack Butland
Goalkeeper Jack Butland has left Scottish side Rangers to join newly‑promoted Premier League club Hull City on an undisclosed fee. The 33‑year‑old made 157 appearances in three seasons and lifted the League Cup in December 2023 after a spell that saw him become a regular starter.
Hull City, eager to bolster their squad for top‑flight survival, identified Butland as a seasoned Premier League‑capable goalkeeper. The club highlighted his experience in European nights and domestic competitions as fitting their ambition.
Butland explained his move on the Hull City website, stating: "The last few years playing at an incredible club like Rangers, somewhere I hold close to my heart, meant it had to be something really enticing to change that." He added that the Premier League is "the best league in the world" and that the opportunity matches the level he believes he can perform at.
Rangers completed the signing of Ivor Pandur from Hull for £6 million just two days after Butland's departure. Pandur is a goalkeeper who arrives from Hull City.
The move returns Butland to the Premier League, offering him a platform to showcase his abilities on the biggest stage. He believes the Premier League opportunity aligns with the level he is capable of playing at, as expressed in his statement.
Rangers lose a veteran keeper with European experience but have secured a young replacement in Pandur. The Scottish side will look to continue their domestic campaign without Butland.
