How Hansi Flick’s joke sparked Gerard Maldini’s rise at Barcelona

Barcelona defender Gerard Martín told Cadena SER that Hansi Flick first called him ‘Gerard Maldini’ during pre‑season in Korea, a joke that stuck after his move from left‑back to left‑sided centre‑back, and he says the Champions League remains the club’s top priority.

“It started during pre‑season in Korea. I played my first match as a centre‑back because the coach wanted to try me there,” he said. He added that the coach jokingly called him Maldini’, a nickname that then spread online and has remained ever since.

Martin expressed deep gratitude to Flick, noting, “From the moment he decided I would stay with the first team two seasons ago, I always felt his trust, even when I wasn’t playing much.” He said Flick can be fierce when angry but remains objective in his assessments.

He confirmed his mind is no longer divided between positions, stating, “Now I’m fully focused on playing as a centre‑back.” He believes he had a very good season there, though there is always room to improve.

Martin said his performances alongside Pau Cubarsi have cemented the pair as Barcelona’s preferred central defensive partnership. The duo’s understanding on the pitch has become a cornerstone of the team’s defensive stability.

He praised Cubarsi, saying, “We understand each other really well, and hopefully one day we’ll do the same with the national team.” He highlighted the teenager’s maturity, noting that his age is hard to guess from his play.

When asked about the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, Martin replied, “We’ve signed two great players. Julian is a player I like, but the club will decide who they want to bring in for that position.” He added that whoever arrives will surely be good.

He also lauded Ferran Torres, calling him a great player who has proven his worth over the past seasons. Whether starting or coming off the bench, Torres has contributed heavily to the team.

Looking ahead, Martin summed up Barcelona’s ambition: “The Champions League. Everyone knows that’s the one we want.” The European competition remains the club’s top priority.
