How Chelsea Blues could shrink 41-man roster amid European exit

How Chelsea Blues could shrink 41-man roster amid European exit

Chelsea face a massive senior roster of 41 players with only 25 days left in the transfer window, and new boss Xabi Alonso is determined to cut the list after the club failed to secure European football this season. The lack of continental competition leaves a clear gap in the squad’s ambition and forces the Blues to streamline for harmony and financial stability.

Although the Premier League permits clubs to register an unlimited number of players, the 25‑man senior squad rule still applies, with under‑21 and homegrown quotas covering most of the roster. Alonso knows that keeping players who are not involved in matchday plans can damage squad cohesion, especially when the club cannot field them regularly.

To reach a manageable 25‑man senior group, Chelsea must offload 16 players before the start of September. The club previously endured a "bomb squad" situation with Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi, a practice now prohibited by FIFA, highlighting the urgency of a drastic reduction.

Five senior players are already absent from first‑team training: centre‑back Benoit Badiashile, defender Axel Disasi, forward Marc Guiu, striker David Datro Fofana and midfielder Caleb Wiley. All are listed as available for permanent moves or loans, and the club has attached price tags such as £30m for Badiashile and £25m for Disasi and Guiu.

Transfer activity is already underway. Defender Trevoh Chalobah is close to a £31m move to Como, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen will join sister club Strasbourg on loan. Chelsea are also nearing a £16.3m deal for Rayo Vallecano full‑back Pep Chavarria, adding further depth to the right‑back position.

The Blues continue their Asian tour, facing AC Milan in Indonesia on Saturday and Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta'zim on Sunday, with two different XIs expected. Injuries have sidelined Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill, and striker Emmanuel Emegha remains in hamstring rehabilitation, limiting immediate options.

Alonso has publicly stated that the centre‑back department must be reduced to "four or five" players. Current options include new signing Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Disasi and Badiashile are earmarked for sale and Mamadou Sarr is likely to depart on loan.

The next steps involve finalising sales, securing loan moves for fringe players, and navigating the UEFA settlement agreement that runs for three more seasons. With the summer window closing soon, the Blues must balance financial pressures, squad harmony and the need to retain key talent such as Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap, who together cost the club £62m according to a Getty ImagesImage caption.
