How Arsenal’s Illan Meslier turned early disgust into Europe’s elite
How Arsenal’s new signing Illan Meslier completed his move at the start of this month, yet remains the Merlevenez boy whose reluctant start as an eight‑year‑old goalkeeper has led to a reputation as one of Europe’s most highly rated young keepers.
Meslier’s strong local roots run deep, a fact highlighted in a photo by George Wood/Getty Images that shows the youngster in his hometown near Lorient, where his first coaches still speak of him with immense pride.
For Loic Hado, one of those early mentors, the goalkeeper’s rise is a story worth preserving; he has amassed notebooks filled with newspaper cuttings, photographs and reports documenting every stage of Meslier’s career, “To see a Merlevenez child walking on the Arsenal pitch is much more than a pride, it’s a daydream,” Hado said. “Apart from PSG, there is no club above.”
In 2007, ES Merlevenez needed a keeper for a match and Bardouille persuaded the youngster to take the gloves. “How can I tell you that he had no choice?” Bardouille recalled. “He was disgusted and didn’t want to play that game.”
Meslier himself described the moment as “a bit by chance” in 2018, recalling that at eight his old club had no goalkeeper during a tournament in Hennebont, and he was asked to fill the role. The first outing ended in an 8‑3 defeat against FC Lorient, yet observers noted an individual display that hinted at future promise.
Hado added that at the time “we had a golden generation… it wasn’t necessarily Illan. He was a child like any other.” Former teammate Mael Cozian remembered a quiet youngster who “did his job, was listening, and made no noise.” That composure helped earn Meslier a place at FC Lorient in 2009, a moment captured in a photo by Cameron Howard/Getty Images and celebrated by locals as “an incredible excitement.”
After signing his first professional contract with Lorient in 2018 and breaking into the first team under Mickael Landreau, Meslier’s progress stalled when Christophe Pelissier arrived with Paul Nardi, leaving him on the bench. The setback prompted a move to Leeds United in 2020, where he flourished under Marcelo Bielsa and established himself as one of Europe’s most highly regarded young goalkeepers before a later change of leadership altered his fortunes.
As Meslier prepares for the next chapter at Arsenal, the village of Merlevenez continues to follow every step, convinced one of their own belongs among Europe’s elite. Arsenal fans will be hoping he proves them right, a sentiment captured in a recent photo by Ed Sykes/Getty Images.
